Scientists Begin Testing World's Largest Atom Smasher
Rabu, 10 September 2008 07:32:43 -- A team of European scientists Wednesday initiated a vastly ambitious experiment they say could provide the answers to the origins of the universe. Scientists fired the first protons through the $10 billion atom smasher called the Large Hadron Collider, which features a 27-kilometer long underground tunnel near Geneva. When the machine is at full power, it will guide two beams of protons in opposite directions at speeds close to that of light, through a vacuum as cold and empty as outer space. When the protons collide, it will create an enormous amount of heat and energy in a small area. Project leaders with the European Organization for Nuclear Research say the machine will create the conditions that were present less than one-billionth of a second after the Big Bang - the phenomenon many scientists say created the universe. Project leaders say the machine will also let them probe so-called Dark Matter - the invisible matter that makes up 80 percent of the universe and that has been one of science's great mysteries. Some European and American scientists have filed a lawsuit to stop the experiment, saying it may create microscopic black holes that could swallow the Earth. Project leaders call these fears ridiculous.(www.voanews.com)
S. Korean Intelligence Says Kim Jong Il Suffered Stroke
Rabu, 10 September 2008 07:13:16 -- A South Korean lawmaker says the country's intelligence service has testified that North Korean leader Kim Jong Il is recovering from a stroke. North Korean officials say Kim Jong Il is just fine, and reject a proliferation of media reports that have questioned his health. As VOA's Kurt Achin reports from Seoul, no other nation depends so heavily on one single individual. Kim Jong Il (Aug 2002 file photo) Kim Jong Il (Aug 2002 file photo) South Korean lawmaker Won Hye-young told reporters Wednesday the country's intelligence service believes Kim Jong Il has suffered a stroke - but that he should be able to recover. Won attended a closed parliament session at which he said intelligence officials testified Kim Jong Il cannot walk, but remains conscious. That account sharply contradicts North Korean assessments of his condition. The Japanese news agency Kyodo quotes North Korea's second highest-ranking leader, Kim Yong-nam, as saying nothing is wrong with Kim Jong Il. A senior North Korean diplomat rejects recent reports about his health as worthless and part of a conspiracy plot. Sixty-six-year-old Kim Jong Il holds absolute power in North Korea's authoritarian government. He is believed to have some health issues, including diabetes. However, rumors of a more serious illness surfaced Tuesday, when he failed to appear at a military parade to mark the 60th anniversary of North Korea's founding. That followed weeks of absence from public view. Unification Minister Kim Ha-joong told a parliament hearing the government is on high alert. A spokesman for the South Korean President Lee Myung-bak says he has been meeting with top officials to discuss preparations for any possible emergency. Analysts say it is difficult to overstate Kim Jong Il's personal importance to North Korea's political cohesion. He is heir to a religion-like cult of personality the state built around his father, Kim Il Sung, the country's first president. He is also seen as the only individual who can rise above factions who might otherwise jostle with each other for power. Human rights advocates say Kim Jong Il is also the lynchpin of a system that relies on terror to ensure public order. His absence could make it more difficult to manage millions of impoverished North Koreans who have endured near-starvation conditions for nearly two decades. A North Korean collapse would create a security nightmare for the country's nearest neighbors, China and South Korea. Leaders there fear a tidal wave of refugees. South Korea could possibly find itself having to pay for hundreds of billions of dollars in emergency infrastructure and social welfare costs for the decayed North. Getting control of North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile arsenal would be a chief concern for Washington. Kim Jong Il was openly groomed by his father for several decades, but has not publicly designated any successor for himself. Kim Yong-hyeon - a North Korea specialist at Seoul's Donguk University - says it is unlikely a family member will take over in Pyongyang. He says the most likely successor to Kim Jong Il would come from top brass of the military, the strongest of North Korea's organizations. Those details - like the health prognosis of the North Korean leader - remain, for now, a matter of speculation and guesswork. (www.voanews.com

Rabu, 10 September 2008 06:58:32 -- Former president Abdurahman Gus Dur Wahid says he will support former minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra in the presidential election next year. Gus Dur, a patron of the National Awakening Party (PKB), told a press conference on Saturday he must support other candidates, if later he could not run for president himself. I have to support other candidates, and the one who is closest to me is Yusril, he said after receiving Yusril at the Nahdlatul Ulama office, Antara news agency reported Sunday. Yusril, who is chairman of the Crescent Star Party (PBB) advisory board, admitted he had discussed his intention to run for president with Gus Dur. We have known each other, been close friends and helped each other since 1999, he said. Yusril, along with Gus Dur and Megawati Soekarnoputri all took part in the presidential election in 1999, but at the last moment he dropped out of the race and supported Gus Dur, who was then elected as the fourth president of Indonesia. With support from Gus Dur, Yusril said, he was more optimistic about his chances in the election. God willing, we will move forward and never retreat, he said. (dre) (www.thejakartapost.com
Japanese man sues RI government
Rabu, 10 September 2008 06:49:32 -- SURABAYA: A Japanese national filed a suit Thursday with the Surabaya District Court against the President for the latter's failure to protect his legal rights under the Indonesia-Japan Treaty of Amity and Commerce. Subagyo, the lawyer representing Matsumoto Kenichi -- a resident of Sakai City in Osaka Prefecture -- said his client was suing Yudhoyono and the National Police chief for failing to respond to his complaint about a fraud committed by a Surabaya resident. The case is as simple as it is, but we want to offer a lesson to the Indonesian government on legal certainty, he said Thursday. He explained his client had written to law enforcement officials several times, mainly the President, to handle his case under the bilateral amity and commerce agreement, but so far he has received no response. He said the case began in 2004 when Riana Tyas Lestari, a resident of the Karangrejo Sawah area in the city, came to his client's house pretending to offer an English course for businesses. After managing to get an advance of Rp 6 million (US$628), Riana went missing and the debt was never paid back, he said. Before submitting a letter to the President, he said, Matsumoto had first filed a complaint with the city police. -- JP (www.thejakartapost.com)
Capello brings up Wembley concern
Rabu, 10 September 2008 06:46:57 -- Fabio Capello believes England will perform with more confidence in Croatia than they have when playing at Wembley. Croatia have never lost a competitive game at the Maksimir Stadium in Zagreb, but Capello feels his side may be under less pressure there than at home. When we play at home we don't play with a lot of confidence, so I prefer to play away from home, the England coach said. We are very good technically but sometimes during games we don't do it. Both captain John Terry and striker Jermain Defoe have stated England would be happy to come away with a draw from Wednesday's World Cup qualifier in Zagreb, but Capello believes a win is possible. He said: I think we played every game better and with more confidence, in this moment I know Croatia and their strong points. I'm sure tomorrow we will play well. I understand the spirit of the group, the spirit of the team is going up. Capello's men know from experience that their results against Croatia are likely to have a significant bearing on their hopes of progressing to South Africa in 2010. The Croats beat England home and away en route to Euro 2008, their 3-2 victory at Wembley in November ending England's bid to reach the finals in Austria and Switzerland. But the Italian doesn't believe that result will have a bearing on Wednesday's outcome. PHIL MCNULTY BLOG Am I the only person who thinks Wembley has yet to find its soul? I know what happened in the past but I always think about the future, he said. It's a new game, a new season and the players now aren't thinking about what happened in the last game, they're focusing on this game. We're a different team, with a different manager. Meanwhile, captain John Terry maintains the memory of the defeats in Zagreb and at Wembley will be as good a motivator as any team talk. He said: Sometimes it's called for and I will do that to get the group going, but a calm head is sometimes a wise head. The memories of what happened here last time will be enough to get the lads fighting. Their home record speaks for itself, we have to respect them and that's what we will do. But we've moved forward from a year ago, we're in better shape than we were then, and we need to move forward with confidence. We didn't have that at Wembley, but here it's a fresh start, and a new campaign. Terry also acknowledged England needed to repay their travelling fans after receiving boos during their last outing against Andorra. We owe every single England fan success, good performances and results, he said. The fans are paying a lot of money to see us and we need to improve. England lie second in Group Six after beating Andorra 2-0 in their opening qualifier on Saturday, while Croatia top the pool following their 3-0 win against Kazakhstan. Only the group winners are guaranteed a place in South Africa, with eight of the nine runners-up entering the play-offs and the one remaining runner-up missing out altogether. (bbc.com)
